Introduction

The Orthopaedic Institute (TOI) at Macquarie University Hospital brings together leading orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals in a purpose-built environment focused on surgical excellence and patient recovery. We are seeking an experienced perioperative leader to take operational ownership of the TOI theatre complex, based at Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde.

As TOI Theatre Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day and fiscal coordination of TOI perioperative services. Working alongside Nurse Unit Managers, the Theatre Scheduler, surgeons and anaesthetists, you will optimise theatre utilisation, manage staffing and rostering requirements, and resolve the operational issues that arise across a busy surgical service. It is a role that balances clinical credibility with commercial awareness and genuine people leadership.

This is a visible leadership position within Macquarie University Health, where clinical care, teaching and research sit side by side. You will contribute to models of care, standardisation initiatives and education programs that shape both patient outcomes and the development of the perioperative workforce.

About the Role

Reporting to the Associate Director - Perioperative Services, the TOI Theatre Manager provides day-to-day leadership, troubleshooting and fiscal coordination across the TOI perioperative service. You will lead a team including the TOI Scrub/Scout NUM, TOI PACU/DSU/Anaesthetic NUM, Clinical Nurse Educator, Operating Theatre Technicians and Theatre Scheduler, ensuring care is delivered in line with legislative requirements, ACORN standards and professional guidelines.

Key Accountabilities (Including but not limited to)

• Coordinate the efficient use of operating sessions and lead theatre utilisation and KPI performance, in collaboration with Nurse Unit Managers, the Theatre Scheduler, anaesthetists, surgeons and the Bookings team
  
• Facilitate perioperative patient flow processes and initiatives, including the coordination and reallocation of emergency bookings across the Operating Rooms, Anaesthetic Bay, Macquarie Medical Imaging and ICU
  
• Oversee daily staffing allocations, roster development and leave coordination in line with operational needs across the theatre complex
  
• Provide professional leadership, performance management support, conflict resolution and career development for the TOI perioperative team
  
• Ensure clinical practice, infection control and documentation comply with NSW Health, ACORN, NSQHS Standards and Macquarie University Health policies and procedures
  
• Lead standardisation of equipment and consumables, contribute to models of care and drive continuous quality improvement, education and service-based projects across the unit

About You

• Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse (Division 1)
  
• Minimum five years' post-registration experience in perioperative nursing, including demonstrated experience in operating theatre list management
  
• Demonstrated understanding of surgical Key Performance Indicators and fiscal management across a perioperative suite
  
• Proven leadership and management capability, with the ability to take initiative in resolving complex operational issues
  
• Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to align surgeons, anaesthetists and multidisciplinary teams to shared objectives
  
• Working knowledge of and commitment to continuous quality improvement, the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and contemporary nursing and healthcare trends
